Ready to Study/Work Abroad?

When we clinked glasses at the start of 2020, nobody could have predicted what was coming in the months ahead. The spread of the Covid-19 completely shut down travel all around the world. We have all tried to make the best of our “stay-at-home” life. We improved our cooking skills by swapping instant pot recipes, we bought Pelotons and fitness Mirrors to create home gyms, we adopted puppies and we attempted to replace travel by putting those ridiculous beach backgrounds on our daily, pant-free Zoom calls.

But as someone who has traveled every month for many years, nothing replaces the real experience of traveling. We all enjoy a change of scenery, the feel of sand on your feet, a night in yummy hotel bedding, and dressing up a bit for dinner. As we continue to face a Covid-life, we all have to decide for ourselves how to navigate the world outside of our home. It might be as simple as taking a drive for an outdoor picnic in the next town or you may be ready to venture out a bit farther!

With so many of us working from home and so many kids working remotely, you might not realize some of the interesting options to “study/work abroad”! Imagine waking up for an early morning surf class before breakfast back in bed. Then the family settles in at various work stations (at a beautiful resort) where your kids get ready for a day at remote learning school and you lead your first of many Zoom work meetings (again pants optional!).

Here are some great ideas for this fall to work/study/travel all at once:

Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita (north of Puerto Vallarta):

This award-winning resort expanded their legendary “Kids For All Seasons” program to support learning remotely with tech hotline, study buddy program, and art, culture, history as well as after-school sports classes for memorable beachfront schooling or work experience. Pool and beach cabanas can be transformed into private work/study stations with ocean views. Wi-Fi, headphones, chargers, laptops, and snacks are all available. After school activities include tennis, fitness, and golf clinics. This gorgeous resort also has private villas and you can enjoy for one week or one month (or more!).

Playa Resort & Hotels:

At a bit more affordable price point, consider Playa resort’s “Work & Learn from Paradise”. Enjoy an extended, upgraded stay with reduced rates at these gorgeous all-inclusive resorts (some for families and some adult-only). Quiet spaces for student learning, complimentary laundry services, personal fitness trainers, complimentary conversational Spanish classes, and dedicated shared office space with high-speed Wi-Fi are all included.

Cliff House in Maine

Live, work and play on the Cliff! R Family Vacations recently hosted a winter weekend getaway at this spacious ocean front resort with the most spectacular views! This fall, the Cliff House provides a retreat where you can do it all by the sea. Offering a variety of options with sweeping ocean views for days. Cliff House has equipped two dedicated business center spaces for your conference and Zoom calls with increased bandwidth, tech support, office and printing supplies. They have also added a supervised Study Hall 3 days a week for student online learning. Located minutes away from quaint Ogunquit, Maine, you really can’t find a better spot to enjoy fall foliage and find the necessary balance for busy couples or the entire family.

Napa Valley (domestic option):

Swap out your kitchen workstation for wine country retreat! Be the envy of everyone on your Zoom calls. Napa offers everything from 5-star resorts/villas (Meadowood, Calistoga Ranch), bed and breakfast options (Wine Country Inn, Cottages of Napa Valley) and some really lovely getaways that won’t break your budget and even include breakfast and free Wi-Fi (Embassy Suites, Napa Valley Marriott). Take advantage of less crowds and enjoy access to the best wineries and restaurants (which offer outdoor dining all year).

Private Home/Villa:

If you’re looking for something long term (30+ days), you might want to consider doing a long-term home/villa rental. This gives you all of your normal home amenities and space but with that view and beach you’ve been dreaming about. There are so many options in the Dominican Republic, St Barth’s, and Mexico!

This is a unique year for travel. Get creative and take advantage of some really incredible travel options. We still recommend and encourage wearing a mask and maintaining social distancing. You can still travel and be safe.
